children know how to love

Children know how to love. What could be more heart warming than watching them barter food with one another over their lunchboxes? What could be more pure than witnessing a 5 year old boy tug on a poor girl’s hair because he just likes her so much, but can’t tell her without fear of embarrassment? What could possibly be more romantic than a crumpled up note with the words: “do you like me check yes or no” scrawled illegibly on the back of a coloring page with a unicorn on it? What bouquet of flowers could smell sweeter than a poorly arranged and emaciated fistful of yellow dandelions, tied together with the stem of some other unfortunate weed growing between the cracks in the concrete of the school playground? What could be more gentlemanly than letting your gal win a game of tetherball because she just plain sucks at it and she won’t quit whining when you cream her during every game?

I would want nothing more than to be able to love another the way a child does; to have no silly expectations of gifts and suave pick up lines, and to just simply feel excitement and happiness and urges to tug their hair and squirm around and pick them a pretty bunch of weeds only because I’m in their presence and I want to.

Valentines Day: bouquet of dandelions along with a horribly colored unicorn from a Lisa Frank coloring book? Perfect.
